
About Dr. Yu-Shiaw ChenDr. Yu-Shiaw Chen was born and raised in Taiwan. She obtained her bachelor's and master's degrees in Botany from National Taiwan University in Taipei, Taiwan in the early 1970's. Upon graduation, she joined the faculty at her alma mater. She taught Plant Physiology for five years before she came to the United States. During that time, co-authoring with her professor, she published a lab book entitled, Experiments In Plant Physiology, for her students. In 1976 she came to the United States on a scholarship to pursue advanced studies at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, City University of New York. Five years later, she was awarded a Ph.D. degree in biochemistry from Mount Sinai. Since then, she has been an active biomedical research scientist, working in various research institutes including Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Brookhaven National Laboratories, The State University at Stony Brook, and two biotechnology companies. During those years, Dr. Chen had nineteen of her papers and abstracts published in scientific journals such as BIOCHEMISTRY, APPLIED ENVIRON-MENTAL MICROBIOLOGY, JOURNAL OF INTERFERON RESEARCH AND PHARMACEUTICAL RESEARCH. In her last position, she worked as a pharmaceutical consultant for four years. With a deep realization and profound compassion for improving quality of people's life, Dr. Chen began her career as a nutrition counselor and health educator in 1995. She enrolled herself in the study of nutrition, and has been focused on diet and lifestyle changes and their positive effects on the prevention of diseases. Upon completion of her course requirement, she received her CERTIFIED NURITIONIST designation from American Health Science University. She has been lecturing to the public regularly at Long Island High Technology Incubator of State University of New York at Stony Brook for the past five years. In addition, She was invited to deliver her speech at local groups, such as AARP, Osteoporosis Supporting Group, Chinese Association in Suffolk County, and Hadassah, Middle Island Chapter, The Women's Zionist Organization Of America in New York. As a guest speaker, she also presented "Taking Control of Your Own Health" at Mourning Cloak Ranch and Botanical Gardens, Tehachapi, California. Internationally, she has given several speeches to various organizations in Taipei and Tainan, Taiwan. In addition to her private nutrition counseling, she taught three courses at Three Village School District and Smithtown School District between 1997 and 1999. These courses are HEALTH: A SCIENTIST'S HOLISTIC APPROACH, LIFESTYLE WEIGHT MANAGEMENT PROGRAM and WOMEN'S HEALTH. Furthermore, she led and taught numerous teleclasses both in English and Chinese between 1998 and 1999. In 1996, Dr. Chen was interviewed by AIM Corporation and by a Chinese Radio Station in Flushing, New York in 1997. In 2000, University Radio Station, WUSB, at Stony Brook, interviewed her jointly with Lawrence Jacobs, M.D., twice, in September and October. Currently, as an active member of Physicians Committee of Responsible Medicine (PCRM), Dr. Chen is devoting herself to fulfilling PCRM's mission. Her speeches include, Enzyme's Vitality in Living Foods, Controlling Diabetes, Prevention of Breast Cancer and Osteoporosis, and many more. In addition, She always makes herself available for private nutritional counseling. |
